All Roads Lead Down Under is a six-part FIFA+ Original documentary series following the extraordinary journeys of women’s national football teams as they compete to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™. Produced by Whisper for FIFA+, the series spans multiple continents, offering unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to players, coaches and federations as they pursue a place at the largest standalone women’s sporting event in history.
Representing more than football alone, the series explores the personal stories, cultural identities and social impact behind the global growth of the women’s game. From emerging football nations to established international powerhouses, All Roads Lead Down Under captures the resilience, ambition and determination of athletes competing on the world’s biggest stage, while addressing themes including equality, opportunity, race and national identity.
As part of the international production team, Nick Bolger produced and directed documentary segments filmed across New Zealand, Costa Rica, Cameroon and France, leading local story units and managing complex productions in diverse cultural and logistical environments. Working closely with Whisper and FIFA+, Nick oversaw field production, directed on-location filming and helped shape character-driven stories that combined intimate personal access with the scale and ambition of a global sporting documentary.
Supporting these productions, Icon International coordinated multi-country production logistics, local production management, crew collaboration and on-the-ground operational support, ensuring each location was delivered to FIFA+’s international production standards. Filming across four countries required adaptable production planning, cultural sensitivity and close collaboration with local partners, allowing the series to capture authentic stories in vastly different environments while maintaining a consistent cinematic style.
