U2 launched their groundbreaking 360° Tour at Barcelona’s Camp Nou on 30 June 2009 in front of 90,000 spectators. The opening concert provided the setting for the live music video for “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight”, directed by Alexandre Courtès and produced by Partizan.
Icon International provided specialist aerial filming for the production, coordinating a twin-engine helicopter equipped with a Cineflex V14 HD system to capture U2, the vast 360° “Claw” stage and a packed Camp Nou from the air. The aerial unit included the Cineflex camera operator and aerial photography support, with Icon managing the operation locally.
Icon’s contribution to the finished video also came from the ground. As part of the wider filming operation surrounding the tour launch, Icon’s HD crews captured performance footage inside the stadium.
Following the concert, Partizan commissioned Icon to review the Barcelona concert master tapes and select shots for the music video. Icon worked through the material in Final Cut Pro, preparing and uploading the chosen footage directly to the production team.
The finished film combined the energy of U2 performing live with images that revealed the extraordinary scale of the new tour, from the band on stage to the stadium seen from above.
For Icon, the project stretched from filming at Camp Nou to helping identify the images that would make the final cut, combining local production, specialist aerial cinematography and post-production support on a music video created at the launch of one of U2’s most ambitious tours.
