Before live performance sessions became a defining part of online music culture, VVusic set out to capture emerging artists with the production values of broadcast television while preserving the immediacy and authenticity of a live performance.
Co-created by John Ashby and Nick Bolger, VVusic was an independent live music platform dedicated to producing beautifully crafted multi-camera performances featuring some of the most exciting artists emerging from New York’s thriving indie music scene. Conceived several years before professionally produced live sessions became commonplace online, the project combined cinematic filmmaking with high-quality live sound, creating performances that felt intimate, authentic and visually distinctive.
Together, Ashby and Bolger developed the creative concept, established the production workflow and built a specialist team of directors, camera operators, editors and sound engineers capable of delivering broadcast-quality productions on independent budgets. Every session was filmed using a carefully choreographed multi-camera approach before being edited and mixed to preserve the energy of a genuine live performance.
Alongside filming concerts in clubs and venues across New York, VVusic also created specially staged live performances in locations throughout the city, including memorable sessions filmed in Central Park and other iconic urban settings. These performances blended documentary realism with carefully considered cinematography, giving artists a striking visual identity while remaining true to the immediacy of live music.
Over its lifetime, VVusic produced dozens of performances featuring internationally recognised and emerging artists including The Joy Formidable, Kaiser Chiefs, Aloe Blacc, Ani DiFranco, Balkan Beat Box, White Rabbits, The Grates, Ebony Bones, April Smith and Black Taxi, among many others. The platform became a respected creative space where musicians could present their work in an honest, performance-led environment at a time when high-quality live music content online was still in its infancy.
VVusic reflected Icon International’s entrepreneurial approach to filmmaking—identifying new creative opportunities, developing original production formats and building talented teams to bring ambitious ideas to life. Many of the storytelling techniques pioneered through the project continue to influence the company’s approach to music, documentary and branded content production today.
